Sociologists, economists, and both religious and non-religious thinkers agree on one essential truth: Family is the basic unit of society.

But this raises important questions worth pondering:

  • If family is the basic unit of life, what then forms the basis of family itself?
  • What is the foundation on which families are built?
  • How does this foundation influence the way we perceive, relate to, and function in the broader society — a society where family is central?

The answers vary widely. For some, the foundation is love. For others, it’s economics, faith, social structure, or even purpose-driven collaboration. Some view family as a trusted team, a unit for the division of labor, or a spiritual community grounded in belief in God or a higher power. Others see it as rooted in procreation, survival, continuity, or shared cultural values.

While the definitions may differ, one fact remains clear:
The overall well-being of individuals — especially in later life — is deeply rooted in, and profoundly shaped by, their family experience.

So what must a society prioritize if it hopes to protect, preserve, and perpetuate families that nurture competent, confident, and caring individuals?

This is the very gap the Family Resource Network (FRN) seeks to address.
